Try a real Physics thought experiment

One change in speed. Two different orbits.

A short original conceptual challenge reveals the difference between remembering facts and reasoning from principles.

Gravitation · Concept challenge

A satellite is moving in a circular orbit. At one instant its speed changes tangentially, without changing its position.

Assume the resulting orbit stays bound and does not collide with the planet.

  1. If its speed increases slightly, is that position perigee or apogee on the new orbit?
  2. What if its speed decreases slightly?
Reveal the reasoning

Immediately after the change, radial velocity is zero. A speed greater than circular speed produces outward radial acceleration, so the point is perigee. A lower speed produces inward radial acceleration, so the point is apogee.

At that instant, the radial equation gives r̈ = vt²/r − GM/r². Its sign distinguishes the two turning points.

Teaching method

Learn to construct solutions, not recognise them afterwards.

01 · Diagnose

Identify why a question stalls: concepts, mathematical setup or strategy.

02 · Connect

Build physical intuition through diagrams, derivations and conservation laws.

03 · Challenge

Practise multi-concept questions, suitable previous-year problems and alternative approaches.

04 · Review

Analyse mistakes and develop a targeted plan for the next practice session.

In a former student's words

Strong outcomes begin with understanding.

Viraj Agase · AIR 383 JEE Advanced (reported)

“From the first class, I was impressed by how clearly Rajeev Sir explained concepts. He built my confidence by taking questions from basic to advanced level and was always patient when I had doubts. Under his guidance I secured AIR 383 in JEE Advanced, AIR 222 in JEE Main 2020 and also became a KVPY Scholar.”
